Outdoor Murals at Calabasas Elementary School
Four mural projects facilitated by Yermo Aranda adorn the playground and classrooms at Calabasas Elementary School. Aranda colloborated with various grades to complete each mural:
Relatives of the Rain Forest with Castillo, 2001
The story of the Hummingbird and the Sun, 2000
The Cougar Garden, 2001
Turtle Island, 2001.
The mural, Tutrle Island, links the past to the present by honoring the indigenous peoples of the Americas whose land we now occupy. The name turtle island is used by some indigneous groups to refer to North America. By including the Aztec calander behind the turtle he links indigenous peoples of Mexico to the indigenous peoples of North America.
