Jessica Carmen
Jessica Carmen is an artist and writer born and raised between Watsonville’s fields and Santa Cruz’s beaches. Her subject matter often reflects the duality of her adolescence as a first generation Mexican-American and Chicana. Jessica’s interpretations of the different imagery and ideals within her culture can be seen in a variety of works. Vibrant colors and intricate line work draw the eyes while the simple representation of complex subject matter keep the mind enticed. The source of her inspiration ranges from Chicanx culture, including murals, prison style calligraphy and ex voto paintings, alongside the graffiti culture that dominated her childhood neighborhood. When assisting in the creation of Watsonville’s “Sabor” mural, she utilized her knowledge of pin striping lowriders to create clean, crisp lines that would become the basis for the serape color blocks that followed
