Murals at Watsonville Charter School of the Arts

Four murals by Jaime Sanchez cover the quad area at Watsonville Charter School for the Arts. Jaime was a student at this very school which he credits to providing him creative opportunities to show his talent at such a young age. These murals painted between 2009-2010 feature wildlife and elements recognizable in the Monterey Bay area. For instance, one wall features cypress trees. He was inspired by the aesthetic of renowned Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco, to paint thick expressive and un-refined lines.

On another wall separate from the quad is a mural entitled “The Ancestor’s Future,” a project led by Yermo Aranda in 2005. The mural makes homage to the indigenous peoples, the original inhibitors of this land, by representing them in the clouds visible on the top center of the mural. He painted the mural with the assistance of students and parents.
